What is a Platform Bed?

nagara-bed-slatsFor a sleek and modern look to your bedroom, look no further than a platform bed. One of the simplest of all bed frame and foundation setups, platform beds are exactly what they sound like: a mattress resting on a flat base platform.

Compared to traditional beds, platform beds are generally closer to the ground because they don’t require a box spring and have lower frames. Instead, the platform mattress gets all the support it needs from a flat base or built-in slatted supports. Incredibly utilitarian, they can be ordered as or built into storage beds with compartments, drawers and even connecting nightstands to the body of the frame.

By eliminating the need for a box spring, the bed’s height is cut down by as much as a third, which can make smaller rooms feel more spacious and offer more comfortable access getting in and out of bed for some people. Platform beds can be incredibly ornate and made from the finest woods for the master bedroom’s platform queen bed or king bed, while being simple enough for DIY people to create on their own with ventilated plywood and a few strong base pieces.

This support structure is not for everyone though. Some people prefer the loft and height traditional box spring setups provide, and those who like very soft beds may find a platform mattress firmer than they would prefer. But like everything in life, it’s all up to personal taste and preferences. There is no denying though, that platform beds are one attractive and sensible option for furnishing your home.
