Protect wicker furniture with polyurethane

Written by Wicker Paradise

We buy wicker furniture with the expectation of using it for years. However, the lifetime of these pieces depends on maintenance and care. Part of this care is repairing any damaged bits or restoring the luster of the furniture. After completing repairs or giving them a few coats of paint, a good way to provide added protection is to finish it with a water-based polyurethane coat. This type of top coat works for most types of outdoor furniture, including seagrass furniture. Here is a step-by-step guide on applying a protective coat:

Place the furniture on a cloth in a protected area, ideally outdoors. We need a protected area to prevent dust and wind exposure during the coating process.

Clean the furniture properly, with soap and water. Wipe any excess water and allow to dry for a few hours.

Apply the polyurethane as per the instructions, from top to bottom and left to right. For the harder to reach areas, turn the furniture upside down.

Apply thin coats of poly at a right angle. Thin coats are best for durability. Also, remember that there is a drying time between coats, usually at least an hour.

Apply the final coats and allow the furniture to dry out properly. Run your hand along the hidden surfaces to confirm that the poly is dry.

Allow the furniture to cure for at least a day and then return it back to its place outdoors.
